Choose the Right Shape
The first place to start is by choosing the right cover shape to match your pool.
We only found one oval-shaped cover that we liked – the one from Splash Pools – and most are rectangular or round.
If you have a custom shaped pool, just make sure that the cover is larger than the entire surface of the pool so that you can trim it down to size.
You won’t need any special tools to cut the material. Regular scissors will do.
Does color matter?
Most solar covers are blue, but you will notice a few clear options out there as well as some that are black. Does the color really make a difference?
It does, but as to which one is better depends on whom you ask!
Luckily, some of the brands on our list offer their products in different colors, which means that you can choose, however here are two valid arguments to consider when comparing clear and blue covers.
- Clear. Some argue that clear covers are better since they don’t absorb as much heat and allow it to pass through to the pool better.
The result, in this case, is that the heat is distributed more evenly through the water and heats the water more consistently.
- Blue. Some swear by the blue covers, and you’ll find that most of the covers are this color, but they tend to heat the water near the surface of the pool without doing much for the deeper water.
On the other hand, some feel that heating the surface is just as effective because once you start to swim, you’ll circulate the heated water into the pool.
Not everyone may agree which is the best solar pool cover color, but considering both sides of the argument will help you make a more confident decision in the end.
How Does the Shape of the Bubble Effect the Cover?
You have two choices in bubble shape – round or diamond.
Most covers feature round bubbles since they do a great job at preventing evaporation and retaining heat/transferring heat.
Round bubbles, however, have a smaller surface area that touches the water than diamond-shaped bubbles do, making the latter the more effective at heating the water in less time.
Top 3 Best Solar Pool Cover Reviews
After researching and trying a variety of products, Sun2Solar was the product that won us over.
We appreciate the fact that they offer their product in both blue and clear, and the clear cover also comes with either round bubbles or diamond-shaped bubbles.
The warranty is also impressive – they provide you with a 2-year full warranty and an 8-year limited warranty when you purchase it. Even if you trim the cover to match the size of your pool, the warranty is still valid, which is awesome!
We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this product to others. It is proudly made in North America!
Intex is a brand to consider when you’re shopping on a budget. It gets the job done. However, it is not the best pool cover on our list in the quality department.
The material used is nowhere near as good as Sun2Solar’s, and this will be evident if you roll and unroll the cover frequently.
It will keep the heat in and help prevent the water from evaporating, and we have to admit that it is a good deal for the size of material you’re getting. The true measurements are 17.8 inches by 8.4 inches (we rounded up in the table), so if your pool is larger than that, you should consider a larger product.
If you don’t use your pool regularly and if you want an inexpensive way to help keep the heat trapped inside, then this is a great product to consider.
We liked that Harris offered their cover in so many different sizes. It makes it much easier for you to waste less product if you have to trim or find an exact size match for your pool. This cover is 16 feet by 32 feet, but there are eight other sizes to choose from (all rectangular).
The material is clear, and as we already mentioned above, we prefer this to the blue covers. It was surprisingly heavy, so if you are used to the lightweight covers like that of Intex, this one might feel like a bit of a beast to you.
Just like Sun2Solar, this also comes with a 2-year full warranty but has a 7-year limited warranty rather than 8.
It’s a quality product and one that is definitely worth considering, but if it didn’t meet your needs, check the other seven products on our list.
