How to Shock a Swimming Pool

There are basically three distinct types of shock treatment for your swimming pool. The type of shock you should use depends on the chemistry and appearance of your water.

  • Calcium Hypochlorite (Also Called Cal-Hypo). Is the most common type of shock treatment. It is the most affordable type of shock and usually is about 65 percent available chlorine. Before adding calcium hypochlorite to your pool water, it must first be dissolved. You can do this by adding one pound of treatment to a five-gallon bucket of water. Once it is mostly dissolved, you can add the contents of the bucket to your pool. Once you have added the shock, you should wait at least eight hours before using your pool.
  • Lithium Hypochlorite. Does not contain calcium and is therefore commonly used in areas that have a naturally high calcium content in the water. This type of shock contains about 35 percent available chlorine. The major benefit to this type of pool shock is that it doesn’t have to be pre-dissolved. You can add it directly to your pool water, but you should wait at least eight hours before swimming.
  • Sodium Di-Chlor. Is a slow-dissolving stabilized granular form of chlorine. You can pour Sodium Di-Chlor directly into your pool water, but you should wait at least 8 hours after adding before using your pool. Sodium Di-Chlor usually contains a chlorine stabilizer that will help prevent your pool’s chlorine from being “burned off” by the sun. This means the product will last longer and need to be added less often than some other pool treatments. This product will also help to raise the pH level of your pool water.
  • Potassium Peroxymonosulfate. Is a non-chlorine shock treatment usually used in bromine pools, although it can be safely used in chlorine pools as well. It is very convenient since it dissolves right in your pool water and allows you to resume swimming almost immediately. Potassium Peroxymonosulfate is the most expensive form of pool shock, which may be a drawback for some consumers.
