Reasons to Love the Kamado Grill
The traditional Japanese Kamado is much different from the modern, Americanized version that you are interested in, but the cooking style and shape of the unit have remained the same.
Wouldn’t it be nice to use something that was more natural and more versatile?
If so, then a Kamado grill is just what you need. We love them because,
- they are more versatile,
- they heat more quickly,
- they are smaller,
- the cooking conditions are healthier since you use natural lump charcoal,
- they retain heat better,
- and you have more control over the air flow.
Why Some Models Are More Expensive Than Others
We mentioned earlier that there is a great price difference between some models. Why is that?
- Ceramic. The best Kamado grills are made of ceramic since this material maintains heat better and helps keep the food moister. Think of how well a ceramic-coated roaster oven keeps your turkey moist – the same concept applies to the Kamado grill.
Ceramic grills, on the other hand, are much more expensive and while they do cook better, they are also more delicate.
We recommend that you research the company to see if they offer a warranty because when you invest so much money into a piece of ceramic that will most likely break, it is nice to know that they have you covered in the event of said accident.
- Steel. A more affordable alternative is to choose a steel Kamado. It is much more durable than the ceramic Kamado, and while it does a fine job of cooking food, those who have tried the ceramic Kamado know that there is no comparison.
If you’re new to the Kamado grill, we recommend that you start out with the steel models since they are so much more affordable.
You have the opportunity to test out the grill style and see what you like/don’t like about it before you invest more money in a serious unit.
Top 3 Best Kamado Grill Reviews
Grill dome makes the best ceramic grill on our list, and while we do realize that it is quite a serious investment for many, it is one fine cooking machines.
We tried the X-Large size that has wide, 22-inch grilling surface area and found that it offered enough space to cook for eight. Many start out by using it as a simple grill, but once you test out the smoking, baking, and searing capabilities, you’ll be hooked.
The three cooking racks that come with it definitely set it apart from the competition since you can use them to set up indirect cooking or to cook in different temperature zones of the grill’s belly. You get the grill extender, an indirect cooking rack, and a half moon rack. Cooking several types of foods at once is much easier with these!
We checked out the company’s warranty and were surprised to see that they offer a lifetime warranty on ceramics, a lifetime warranty against rusting, and a 5-year warranty on gaskets.
Hopefully, you won’t ever run into any problems with this grill, but if you do, it’s nice to know that they’ve got you covered.
The best steel Kamado grill on our list was by far the Broil King Keg. While it is just as expensive as some of the ceramic models, it is a well-built unit that we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.
They provide you with a 19-inch grill that has 280 square inches of cooking space. We were pleased to see that the grills were made of cast iron, and while these do provide an amazing sear and transfer heat well, remember that they require more maintenance since you will have to season them and keep them dry to prevent rust.
This grill only has one extra cooking rack you can use, but it is handy and provides you with elevated cooking and more space when you’re preparing a higher quantity of food.
What other Kamado grill out there is compatible with a trailer hitch? If you’re looking for a lightweight, quality, tailgating BBQ, Broil’s King Keg is a clear winner.
We see that they only offer a limited warranty offer on the product, which is nothing compared to the Grill Dome, but overall, we still recommend it if you’re looking for a lightweight, quality Kamado.
This Kamado comes in both a 22-inch size and a 24-inch size if you need a little extra room. It is a much more affordable/entry-level ceramic model than some of the other ones on our list, so if the steel models just won’t cut it for you, we suggest you try this one.
Unlike the previous grill, this one has stainless steel grates, which are easier to clean and maintain. We also appreciated the fold down shelves on the side since these types of grills usually don’t offer you any storage space.
For grilling, it was fabulous. For smoking, it worked great. We did notice that we didn’t have as much air control as we had with some of the other grills, so keep this in mind if you have a precise cooking style.
If any of you have ever tried the Big Green Egg and are looking for an alternative to said Kamado, the Pit Boss will impress you!
